Snoop Dogg shares his thoughts on the feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake as the dust settles.
Entertainment Tonight visited the Doggfather at his Los Angeles compound last week and asked for his opinion on the feud while discussing his role in the new Garfield film. In response, the iconic performer shared a comprehensive overview of the conflict and revealed his allegiance to both Kendrick and Drake, having witnessed their rise to become hip-hop’s biggest stars.
“Well, the only thing I want to say about that whole scenario is that I want to give both of them a shout-out for raising the bar as far as lyrics, as far as song-making and writing because the writing has been upped since the confrontation or whatever you call it, whatever they went through,” Snoop tells ET. “Those are my nephews. I’m not in the middle of it. I support both of them and that’s personal business, not my business.”
Snoop’s career includes legendary feuds with Eazy-E, Eminem, Tupac Shakur, and Suge Knight. In 2011, Snoop passed the title of King of the West Coast to Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick and Drake’s feud produced chart-topping singles “Euphoria,” “Family Matters,” and the instant classic “Not Like Us.”
While Snoop did not choose a winner, he praised both superstars for the impact of their feud on hip-hop. “As far as what they did for the industry and the rap game, they made you rap again,” Snoop said. “You can’t mumble your way and gimmick your way to a song no more, buddy. So, thank y’all.”
Drake used an A.I.-generated Snoop Dogg voice and Tupac’s A.I.-generated vocals in a freestyle, which led to a lawsuit from Tupac’s estate and the removal of the freestyle from YouTube. Snoop reacted to the freestyle immediately upon its release with a video of him confused and returning to bed.
Snoop is set to co-host the Summer Olympics in Paris, while his new drink, Gin & Juice By Dre & Snoop, will host NCAA Bowl games.
