Kim Kardashian’s television empire continues to grow, this time, as she aligns herself with longtime friend La La Anthony (“The Chi”) and hitmaking executive producer Kenya Barris (“Black-ish”).
Kardashian landed a first-look deal with Disney, and the first project to emerge from this collaboration is “Group Chat,” a series inspired by La La Anthony’s 2014 book, The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness. La La will star in and executive produce the series alongside Kardashian and Kenya Barris. Barris, a well-established name in the industry, is the creative force behind ABC’s “Black-ish” and its Freeform spinoff “Grown-ish.”
His recent work includes Netflix’s “You People” and “The Vince Staples Show,” as well as “Diarra From Detroit” for BET+. The show will be co-produced by BET Studios and 20th Television, with Barris’s Khalabo Ink Society also involved.
La La would share her excitement about the upcoming series with her followers on Wednesday (August 15) in an Instagram post captioned:
“This show is about to be CRRAAZZZYYY! Everything you and your friends talk about in love, life, friendships and relationships! Can’t wait!! Thank you @bslater9 for seeing the vision and putting this together! Let’s gooooooooo @hulu!!!!”
Kardashian’s enthusiasm for storytelling is evident in her recent statement: “I’m incredibly interested in telling stories that are personal, complicated, and relevant, drawing from my own experiences and those familiar to me.” She expressed excitement about working with the team at 20th Television, having previously collaborated with them on “American Horror Story: Delicate.”
Karey Burke, president of 20th Television, and Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, praised Kardashian’s ability to capture and shape the cultural zeitgeist. “Kim is a multi-hyphenate in every sense of the word,” they said, noting her unique position to develop and produce stories that resonate deeply with audiences.
With this deal, Kardashian is poised to significantly impact scripted television, bringing her distinct voice and vision to various projects.
