Rich Homie Quan, multi-platinum recording artist known for hit songs “Type of Way,” “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” and “Walk Thru,” died on Thursday morning (September 5) – confirmed by his family and a rep for the Fulton County morgue. The cause of death remains unknown at this time. He was 34.
TMZ Hip Hop reported the Atlanta native, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died in his home. His family told the outlet they are “shattered” and “heartbroken” by the rap star’s sudden death. Hip-hop flooded social media with tributes to Rich Homie Quan and his family after the news broke.
Jacquees, singer, fellow Atlanta native, and Rich Gang affiliate, shared a photo of him and Quan calling Quan a legend, and tweeted, “Rest in Peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for Life #richgang.”
Lil Boosie also shared a series of tweets paying his respects to Quan as he recalls just speaking to him the other day. “Just got word Rich Homie Quan just OD !! Just talk to Wuan the other day.”
He continued: “Just talked to you bra #tipQuan Never gonna forget yo smile n the way talked n of course yo music [100 emoji]. We got some good ass memories together n that go always bring a smile to my face #restupquan We was cooking up some sh*t too.”
Rich Homie Quan arose from Atlanta’s underground hip-hop scene in 2013 with his smash hit “Type of Way.” He would go on to craft classic collaborations with today’s biggest stars like “Mamacita” with Travis Scott, “My Hitta” with YG, and “Lifestyle” with Young Thug as the duo Rich Gang. He was a member of XXL’s 2014 Freshmen Class, along with Lil Durk, Kevin Gates, Chance the Rapper, and Ty Dolla $ign.
In a recent interview, Quan shared his interest of squashing beef with Young Thug and making music together again after Thug’s RICO trial currently taking place. Quan was subpoenaed for the trial in 2023.
Before he passed away, Quan’s career was flourishing. In February, he performed at Jack Harlow’s inaugural Gazebo Festival in Kentucky. In 2024, he released three new songs, including the latest “Ah’chi” featuring 2Chainz.
Rich Homie Quan is survived by his four sons.
