Eve clarifies her comments about Jay-Z previously warning her about female rap success.
During an interview with London newspaper The Times, Eve recalled on the day of her debut album Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady, JAY-Z called her.
During the call Jay congratulated her, and also gave her a warning. Eve suggests that Jay said she shouldn’t her hopes up because female rappers “don’t really do that well.”
Eve Speaks:
Following the interview, Eve provided some clarity for fans. “It’s funny because that was one of those things that we were like, ‘Do we put this in there?’ because you know how people get,” Eve said during another interview. “But there was nothing bad about that.”
“It was a very amazing phone call that I needed. I always felt like I was the underdog anyway. And he wasn’t saying it out of malice or [to be] mean. It wasn’t about that. It was facts, really!”
She says she used Jay’s comments as motivation. “I was like, ‘Okay, lemme see. I’ma show you. It’s all good, and it went on to be fine.”
The project eventually went double platinum.
We previously reported that Eve is the newest Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development for the 2024-25 academic year.
