T.I. and Boosie Badazz built a decorated legacy in hip-hop with their harsh-reality lyrics but that lifestyle is long behind them now. On Tuesday (Sept. 24), a viral video circulated on social media showing the fathers reprimanding their sons, King Harris and Tootie Raww, over flashing firearms while making a music video.
The clip begins with Boosie’s questioning the purpose of having firearms. “Why you got so much iron?” he says to his son while T.I. walks away granting permission to have his son spoken to similarly.
“Treat mine like you treat yours,” says T.I.
According to Boosie, he had just told T.I. how proud he was of their sons’ musical progress. Seeing the violent content they were trying to incorporate quickly turned his excitement into concern.
T.I. then warned that law enforcement could easily show up on set and demand gun permits, potentially resulting in serious legal troubles. In the footage, King Harris is seen correcting the fathers about it being legal to carry a firearm before the fathers offer alternatives.
Fans pointed out the footage was from a year ago, based on King wearing blue raspberry-colored twists-it had not been released before. This is Boosie’s one of many conversations with his son about depicting a street lifestyle. Last December, Boosie recorded himself talking to his son about wearing a “Pooh Shiesty Mask.”
Both Tip and Boosie have been convicted of firearm charges in court, resulting in prison sentences. In 2007, T.I. was arrested by the ATF for purchasing illegal firearms with silencers before performing at the BET Hip-Hop Awards.
Both rappers had been wary of their children’s music’s potential influence, but their intervention appears to have paid off. After all, the young artists grew up watching their fathers help shape southern street rap, a genre known for its raw depictions of life in the streets.
Boosie Badazz is currently fighting a re-opened firearm charge in San Diego, California.
