Power Book II: Ghost aired its final episode over the weekend, and Mary J. Blige bid an emotional farewell to her popular character, Monet Tejada.

As the matriarch of the Tejada family throughout the show’s four seasons, Monet’s journey ended brutally in the penultimate episode nine, when she sacrifices herself to save her children. According to a statement she shared with PEOPLE, Blige reflected on her time in the “Power” universe.

“Joining the Power family and playing Monet Tejada has been a dream,” she said. “This character allowed me to portray a woman I know well, someone who reminds me of my mom and so many other mothers who had to be strong, raising kids in the inner city.”

She also expressed her gratitude to fans: “Watching this final season with the audience has been incredible, and I can’t thank them enough for being part of this ride.”

Throughout the series, Monet’s arc was defined by her complicated relationships with her children, Cane (Woody McClain), Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray), and Diana (LaToya Tonodeo). A tension-filled dynamic developed between her character and Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.).

Rainey Jr. told PEOPLE that Monet’s death deeply affected him. “I knew it was coming, but when I watched her die, I actually shed a tear,” he admitted. “It was the way she went out—protecting her kids. She came out with two guns, throwing her life away for them. She was like, ‘You can take me, but not my babies.’”

He continued: “She went out like a gangster. I can’t lie—I shed a few tears.”

The complete “Power Book II: Ghost” series is now available on Starz.

In other news, Mary J. Blige is set to be inducted into the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with presentations by Dr. Dre and Method Man. The ceremony includes performances by Ella Mai and Lucky Daye.

Mary J. Blige will hit the road this fall with Ne-Yo and Mario.
