Kendrick Lamar may be considered Hip Hop’s MVP for 2024 after his rap battle win over Drake, but he believes another rapper deserves recognition. On Thursday, October 17th, Kendrick made a rare social media post, naming Doechii as the “hardest” rapper right now. Sharing the artwork from Doechii’s latest mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, he posted on his Instagram Stories: “the hardest out [alligator emoji].”

Doechii was quick to respond, showing her gratitude in her own Instagram post. “Thank you Dot. You the greatest,” she wrote, followed by, “Getting your flowers while you can still smell them >>>.”

This recognition isn’t random. The “hardest” Doechii stars in a recent CashApp commercial created by Kendrick’s company pgLang, showing his continued ties with his former label, Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). Doechii recently shared her desire to work with Lamar but admitted she’s not quite ready yet. “I don’t feel entitled to a Kendrick feature, but I would love that. That’s the goal,” she said on The Joe Budden Podcast. She added, “I don’t think I have the record right now for that opportunity. I think I would have to come a certain way, and I don’t think I’m ready.”

Joe Budden and his co-hosts were impressed with her humility, with Budden himself saying, “I love that from you.”

Doechii’s mixtape has been gaining widespread praise, with TDE’s ScHoolboy Q expressing his support on X: “Just Here to say DOEcHii… dats all I care about at da moment.” TDE founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith even compared Alligator Bites Never Heal to Kendrick’s breakthrough 2011 project Section.80, calling Doechii one of the “hardest” in the game.
