The second annual Emirates NBA Cup (formerly the In-Season Tournament) is making its return tomorrow, November 12 (Tuesday). To kick things off, the tournament will commence with an exciting doubleheader on TNT. The New York Knicks will take on the Philadelphia 76ers at 7:30 p.m. ET. In the game, Joel Embiid will make his season debut will make his long-awaited season debut in the game.
In the next game, the Golden State Warriors will face the Dallas Mavericks at 10 p.m. ET. Since he left the Warriors to join the Mavericks in free agency, Klay Thompson will make his return to the Bay Area.
According to the official rules of the tournament, 30 are divided into six groups of five. Of those six groups, there will be three groups of Western Conference teams and three groups of Eastern Conference teams. Each team will play each team in its group once.
Additionally, the six group winners along with one wild card team per conference will advance to the knockout stage. All games from this point forward are single-elimination. The quarter-finals will be played in home venues.
The tournament will be back in Las Vegas for the semifinals and the championship game on December 14 and 17 will take place in “Sin City.”
The Los Angeles Lakers won the inaugural Emirates NBA Cup championship in dominating fashion last season. They went (7-0) in the inaugural edition of the in-season competition. Led by LeBron James who won the first-ever In-Season Tournament MVP.
After winning the MVP, James spoke about winning the first In-Season Tournament.
We’re the first champions of the in-season tournament, and nobody can ever top that,” James said. “It’s great to do it with a historical franchise and just a great cast of funny, engaged, competitive men over here.”
