Napheesa Collier is one of the premier stars of the WNBA. Last season, the Minnesota Lynx forward averaged 20.4 points, 9.7. rebounds, and 3.4 assists. Winning the Defensive Player of the Year, Collier lead the Lynx to the WNBA Finals.
Off the court, she’s a mother and a wife who is concerned about women’s health and reproductive rights as a mother. Recently, she partnered with Opill, the first daily birth control pill available without a prescription in the U.S.
Collier spoke about why the timing of the partnership is critical for women’s health.
“Obviously it is an uncertain time, and there’s a lot of concerns about what could happen with women’s reproductive rights and options. I think the most important thing is education,” Collier said. “We want women to know, like, about their options and a great one is Opill which is why I’m super excited to partner with them. What we both stand for really aligns.
“I think it’s really important for people to know and be informed about their reproductive health and their contraception options. If they want to have access to birth control, they have places to go where it’s so easily accessible, affordable, and effective,” she continued.
Growing up with a mother in the medical field, Collier said that she grew up having conversations about women’s health. With a college tour in the works, she plans to tell students about their options.
“As someone who’s part of the WNBA and as a mother, Opill wants to take away the stigma. It doesn’t have to be an embarrassing topic or something that we shouldn’t talk about publicly. My mom was a nurse so talking about our bodies was normal in our household,” Collier explained. “We talked about reproduction, reproductive rights, and health, in our house. We’re super excited to be going to different college campuses this off-season, to answer questions and to kind of educate them about what Opill is all about.”
Along with partnering with Opill, Collier and Breanna Stewart founded Unrivaled, a 3×3 basketball league for WNBA stars. The inaugural season launches in January.
“It’s been several years in the making and I’m so excited. We’re coming in at the exact moment when women’s sports are exploding. We can’t wait to have the best athletes in the world playing against each other every single night,” Collier said. “Also, they’ll be growing their wealth, because every athlete will have equity in the league. Then it will be an unprecedented amount of access to the athletes with the content that we’re going to be putting out. I’m really excited for everyone to finally see it because it’s been so long in the works.”
