Kerry Washington is taking command.
In her latest role, Washington stars as Captain Charity Adams of the Women’s Army Corp in Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight official trailer. The film is a vivid portrayal of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit.
During World War II, the Black women organized an enormous backlog of undelivered mail for soldiers in England and France.
Per the film’s logline, “Despite facing racism and sexism — and grueling working conditions — [the 6888 members] were committed to serving their country with honor and distinction. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.”
“The soldiers have not heard from their loved ones and their loved ones have not heard from them,” Washington said in the trailer. “When there is no mail, there is low morale.”
H.E.R. is also featured in the trailer performing an original song written by Diane Warren and choreographed by Debbie Allen.
Oprah Winfrey, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Shanice Shantay, and Susan Sarandon are also a part of the cast.
The film is based on the article “Fighting A Two-Front War” written by Kevin M. Hymel in the WWII History Magazine by Sovereign Media. Also, Tyler Perry wrote, directed, and produced the film.
Earlier this year, Perry shared his excitement about the film on social media.
“You have no idea what it means to me to have been given the grace and the blessing to be able to tell THIS story!” Perry wrote on Instagram. “Every detail is dedicated to the memory of the 855 black women and women of color of the Six Triple Eight. When America needed hope, they delivered!”
Six Triple Eight premieres in select theaters on Dec. 6 and will debut on Netflix on Dec. 20.
