George Floyd deserves REAL justice.
The jury selection for Derek Chauvin was supposed to begin today, but it got pushed back.
According to reports, the trial was stalled after challenging the state’s motion to reinstate third-degree murder charges against Chauvin, ABC reports. The prosecution didn’t want to begin selecting jurors until they secured the extra charge. Meanwhile, the defense wanted to continue jury selection.
The former cop Chauvin is accused of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He could face up to 50 years. The prosecuting attorneys want to add a third-degree murder charge, which involves killing someone without intent through dangerous actions and a depraved state of mind (a commonly cited example is a suspect firing a gun or driving a car into a crowd). Minnesota is one of only three states in which the charge exists, the article says.
In preparation for the trial, the city put barricades and extra fences around the courthouse. Peaceful protesters marched around, chanting for Floyd. Floyd was killed last year on May 25 after Chauvin had his knee pinned down on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
