Social justice is a global issue.

Right now in Nigeria, Nigerians are fighting for their lives against The Special Anti-Robbery Squad, also known as SARS. It’s a special unit, The Independent reports, created back in 1992, meant to handle crimes in Nigeria like robbery and kidnapping but, the unit is being called out for police brutalities like unlawful arrests, kidnapping, murder, theft, rape, and more. Youth and women are at risk the most.

The Independent also reports yesterday (October 20), the Nigerian government sent army tanks to attack peaceful protesters, and officers shot at protestors as well. One person is confirmed dead and dozens more were left wounded.

Over the summer, in June 2020, there was a report of at least 82 cases of torture, ill-treatment, and extrajudicial execution between January 2017 and May 2020 the article reports. The people of Nigeria are angry with their government for not holding SARS accountable. On October 11, the Nigerian government responded by announcing it would ban the anti-robbery squad, but, Nigerians feel that’s not enough and the government needs to put an end to the abuse of power.
