The world we know today changed at 6 P.M. EST on February 26, 2012.
Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old from Sanford, Florida put on his black hoodie and walked towards a local 7-Eleven to grab some Skittles and a tall Arizona. Little did he know, the next half hour will make him a new age symbol of justice.
“These a**holes they always get away.”
A man by the name of George Zimmerman is the head of the neighborhood watch inside of the neighborhood where he found this teenager “suspicious.”
Martin sees Zimmerman, stares at him. Allegedly Martin has his hand in his waistband, which keeps him paranoid throughout the chase. The fear of someone following him makes Martin run away. Despite requests from the 911 dispatcher to not follow him, he gets out of the car, and runs off towards him.
Martin disappears. Zimmerman hangs up with Sanford police. The time, 7:13 P.M.
Zimmerman trying to be the hero continued to follow and search Martin, then a fight ensues. Callers from around the neighborhood call the police as they see the altercation occur. Then behind the screams of a boy distressed… pop, pop. By 7:30 P.M. Martin was pronounced dead. Armed with Skittles and an Arizona can.
This day sparked outrage throughout the country in what resulted in a collection of protests, and conversation of race ruled television, social media, inside our homes, and our classrooms.
Yesterday (Jul 31), the first episode of Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story aired on Paramount and BET. The Jay-Z produced program breaks down who Trayvon Martin is as a human, broke down what went down that infamous day, and the reaction thereafter.
Ebro in the Morning sat down with Martin’s parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin where they talked about the impact as parents, their decision to choose Jay-Z, and much more.
