MAJOR progress for Howard University students!
Over the last few weeks, students protested over poor living conditions. Students said there was mold, flooding, and roach and mice infestation in the buildings, CNN reports. Students slept in tents and air mattresses at the school’s Blackburn Center since Oct. 12. Students begged the university to fix it, and now they’ve finally reached a deal.

The article says a spokeswoman for the #BlackburnTakeover (the school’s student center), Jasmine Joof, said, “We have achieved increased scrutiny, transparency and accountability. The Daily Beast points out, the students’ attorney, Donald Temple, said they “courageously journeyed on a path towards greater university accountability and transparency and public safety.”
The details weren’t released to the public yet, but Temple told The Washington Post students were “able to accomplish their goals.” NPR reached out to the top historically Black college, but they didn’t respond as of yet.
The publication also points out the university’s president, Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, released a video message on Monday (Nov. 15) addressing the end of campus protests and how the school will improve conditions for students. He said,“The health and well-being of our students is the most important part of my job as president. As I have said before, even one issue in one of our dormitories is too many, and we will continue to remain vigilant in our pledge to maintain safe and high-end housing.” Take a look:
This recent protest was the university’s most prolonged protest. It caught national attention from Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. William Barber II, and Martin Luther King III. The civil rights leaders showed support for the students. Jackson was on campus earlier this month attempting to mediate the situation.
