Akon is taking things to the next level.
According to reports, he’s building a $6 billion city in Africa. Construction will start next year in Senegal, in the grassy fields of Mbodiene.
The process may take three years or more to build. Construction will begin in 2021. Akon already secured $2 billion of the $6 billion that is needed, The Jasmine Brand reports. He plans on having a hotel, resort by the sea, a tech hub, studio, hospital, police station. Akon is also planning on launching his own cryptocurrency called Akoin.
Akon calls it a “utopian city” or a “real-life Wakanda.” This new city will provide jobs and he’s opening up the land to people fighting racism in other parts of the world like America and Europe. Akon said,
“The system back home treats them unfairly in so many different ways that you can never imagine. And they only go through it because they feel that there is no other way. So if you’re coming from America or Europe or elsewhere in the diaspora and you feel that you want to visit Africa, we want Senegal to be your first stop,” The Jasmine Brand reports.

Akon was born in the United States but his parents were born in Senegal and the music producer spent most of his childhood there. The people of Senegal are excited for Akon to build this city, they also believe it will attract tourist. Minister Alioune Sarr believes Akon’s move will make more people “believers of Africa.”
“COVID-19 has sown doubt everywhere. This means that those who had doubts about the attractiveness of Senegal, and Africa, in general, must convince themselves that there are men and women who believe in Africa.”
