Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have had a lot of ups and downs.
The former NBA star opened up about a challenging time in his life when he had a baby outside of his marriage.
As reported on Vibe, Dwyane sat with Shannon Sharp on his show, Club Shay Shay. Dwyane had a baby with Basketball Wives star Aja Metoyer, while he and Gabrielle Union were on a break.
During the interview, Dwyane revealed Gabrielle ironically helped him through the mess. He said:
“I had to sit with my now-wife about this and have this conversation. I couldn’t have gotten through that moment without her sticking with me. [Me and the Miami Heat] were in the playoffs, I think even going into the finals. That was a rough time for me, bro. You got a lot on your mind, you’re keeping something from people you love, and it’s heavy. At night, when it get quiet, and it’s just you and your thoughts, them thoughts is loud.” He continued,
“I tried to pussyfoot around it. I tried to break up with her. ‘Hey, things have been bad lately. Hey, we have been having a little distance in our relationship anyway.’ I tried all that. She kept showing up. And so, it hasn’t been perfect. It would never be perfect. But that was nine years ago.”
Although they’ve been healing through it, it’s a “forever sting” that doesn’t go away. While talking about having a baby outside of marriage, he said, “It’s been something that is gonna continue to be something that I have to work at and work on. It doesn’t go away because years come or because I say, ‘I’m sorry.’” It wasn’t only hard for Gabrielle, but also for the child, his son, who is now nine. Dwyane said,
“When it comes to my wife and I, it’s always there. But when it comes to my son, that’s hard for him. This is gonna always be there. He’s done nothing. … I think about that. We’re adults. We’re gonna get through it or we ain’t gonna get through it. … This is a young kid who has already got a negative impact next to his name … because of how he was brought into this world….At the end of the day, this is my family. This is my story.”
They met in 2007 and got engaged in 2013. They tied the know in 2014. In 2018, the couple welcomed their beautiful baby girl Kaavia via surrogate, and she’s three years old. Dwyane is also a father to Zaire, 21, and Zaya, 16, from his marriage to Siovaughn. He’s also his 21-year-old nephew Dahveon’s guardian.
