Young Thug’s legal team is firing back after prosecutors requested a delay in the YSL Rico case.
Earlier this week, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis filed a motion to move the trial to March instead of January because many of the defendants in the case don’t have lawyers. According to All Hip Hop, eight of the 28 defendants don’t have representation.
Brian Steel, Young Thug’s attorney, is fighting hard against it. He’s demanding his client be released on bond. Brian said his client is “rotting” in jail. He said,
“It is unjust that [Young Thug] rots in the County Jail and has not yet been provided complete discovery by the prosecution and is being required to wait on the appointment of counsel for co-indictees. He continued,
“This Honorable Court must intervene to prevent this injustice. It is unconscionable that the District Attorney’s Office did not provide the Court system with notice that there would be a great need for appointed counsel on an upcoming case well in advance of the return of the indictment.” In addition,
“The prosecution continues to use this trial date as a weapon to keep Mr. Williams in custody. All of these factors weigh against denying Mr. Williams bond even though he has proven to this Honorable Court that he would be under total house arrest: electronic ankle monitor with law enforcement officers standing guard outside of his home 24 hours a day, seven days per week. Yet, no bond can be set?”
He ended with, “This is wrong and not the way that we treat people in America, the State of Georgia and Fulton County. Something must change.”
Thugger was denied bond three times since getting locked up in May, along with Gunna and 26 YSL members. They were indicted on RICO charges and are accused of operating a violent street gang. Young Thug is believed to be the ring leader.
In August, Young Thug was hit with additional felony charges in the RICO case. Initially, he was charged with two counts but was reindicted on six additional charges.
Brian maintains that his client is innocent and looks forward to fighting the charges in court. As of now, the trial date is set for January 9, 2023. We’ll keep you updated as more details become available.
