André 3000 recently shared that he had an “out-of-body” experience while revisiting his music as part of OutKast. In an interview with Grammy.com, the iconic rapper-turned-flute player described how he spent hours listening to his classic tracks. “Recently, a friend of mine sent me a video of an interview that I was doing, and I was talking about a certain song that I hadn’t heard in a long time,” he explained. Curious, he decided to listen to that song, which led him down a nostalgic path of exploring all his guest verses and OutKast material. “So one day I was in my hotel room listening to all this stuff for hours — five hours of albums and guest stuff.”
André reflected on his reaction to hearing his earlier OutKast work: “And it was surprising because you’re listening as a fan and not remembering where you were at the time when you did them. It’s almost like you’re having an out-of-body experience listening to yourself. Then you realize how much time has gone by and how different of a person you are, which is even crazier.”
Last year, André 3000 left fans and peers feeling disappointed when he revealed he feels too old to continue rapping. “Even now people think, ‘Oh, man, he’s just sitting on raps’ or, ‘He’s just holding these raps hostage.’ I ain’t got no raps like that,” he remarked in an interview with GQ. He added, “Sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap because I don’t have anything to talk about in that way. I’m 48 years old.”
Despite these feelings, he expressed a desire to take on the challenge of creating a full rap album, stating, “I would love to make a rap album. I just think it’d be an awesome challenge to do a fire-ass OutKast album at 48 years old. That’s probably one of the hardest things to do! I would love to do that.”
