26 years ago, Brandy and Monica released an undeniable classic with “The Boy Is Mine.” Produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Dallas Austin, the song became the best-selling song of the year in the US, selling 2.6 million copies, It also was at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Brandy and Monica revealed how it was to reunite nearly 30 years later. They also shared how it feels to be a part of Ariana Grande’s version of the song, “The Boy Is Mine” (Remix).

“It was nothing short of a blessing for Brandy and me not only to reconnect but to reconnect and do something as special as this innovative version of ‘The Boy Is Mine,’” Monica said. “She and I had not seen each other for many years, so it gave us the opportunity to talk not just about the song, but life as a whole.”

Brandy shared that the reunion was about “more than just music,” and she felt it “transported us back to that period of our lives and our careers — such a transformative and explosive time.”

Included on Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album, both Brandy and Monica appreciated her she put her own spin on the song.

“I love the fact that she did not try to remake it in the form that both Brandy and I made it in, but she created something that’s her own and she used nostalgic moments from the record,” Monica said. “That’s what made it such a no-brainer for me because it felt good.”

“Ariana is truly such a kind and talented soul, there is no one that does what she does with more grace and appreciation,” Brandy added.

Learning that the song earned a Grammy, she was filled with gratitude.

“For this record to still be acknowledged in the way that it is and for a completely different generation to be singing a version of it the way that this song has contributed to them doing is unbelievable,” Monica explained. “I was extremely shocked, but filled with so much gratitude, so happy, so ecstatic and shocked.”

Brandy was reminded about receiving the Grammy nomination with Monica which they won for Best R&B Performance which she still keeps on her piano.

“To create something that has stood the test of time and to be able to take a chance by reigniting that creation in a new way and still have it be honored and revered just as the original was is such a blessing,” Brandy added.

After recording “It All Belongs to Me” in 2012, both Brandy and Monica would open to recording another duet to complete the trilogy.

“Absolutely,”  Monica said.

“It’s like magic when Monica and I get together,” Brandy added. “Who knows what could be in store for us?”
