Cash Cobain, Ice Spice, and Chow Lee have made Sexy Drill one of hip-hop’s most popular subgenres in 2024. During the promotion of his new album, Sex Drive, Chow Lee revealed that the subgenre has transcended regional boundaries.

During a recent interview with Billboard, Chow Lee discussed the creation of the new genre with Cash Cobain and fellow Bronx rapper Lonny Love. Fairly new, Lee told the publication, “People were like, ‘Sexy drill? What is that?”

In his explanation of the genre’s creation, Chow Lee described the process.“It was kind of a natural part of our creative process,” he said. “We talk about women and Cash is the mastermind behind the beats. I’ll give him a song to sample, or he’ll sample something. He’ll type in YouTube and ask like, ‘Give me a song to sample?’ Then, he’ll sample it. S**t, we’ll just rap on it.”

Lee recognized the genre’s global impact by collaborating with a London producer Like Tracey. “im not really spiritual!” Lee emphasized, “It shows that everyone from different places can get on sexy drill. Like Tracey is on there. He’s from the U.K. It’s a universal thing. It’s past New York at this point.”

Sex Drive’s driving force is collaborations with Cash Cobain. As a result of their “slizzy summer” campaign centered around the rising Sexy Drill music, Cobain and Lee had the summer in a chokehold.

When asked about “slizzy summer,” Lee said, “A slizzy summer is being outside. It’s a lifestyle. It’s catering to the women, having fun and being yourself. Not being a bozo while handling your business at the same time.”

He continued: “I’m trying to keep it PG-13, but it speaks for itself.”

eeFlo Milli, Roy Woods, Baby Swag, and Anycia collaborate on Sex Drive. Chow Lee is set to perform at the 10th anniversary of Rolling Loud: Miami in December.
