Chris Brown responded to the petition calling for the cancellation of his first-ever South African concert in Johannesburg’s First National Bank Stadium on Tuesday (October 15).
An organization called Women For Change launched a petition after learning that Brown would be performing in South Africa, asking the government to reconsider allowing him to perform. In an interview with the BBC, Sabina Walter, the organization’s executive director, expressed her dismay.
“When I saw the news that Chris Brown was coming to South Africa, I was shocked and deeply disappointed,” Walter said.
The petition known as “MuteChrisBrown” has has garnered over 39,000 signatures to date, with 6,500 of those coming in on October 16 alone. The organization would share a TikTok video detailing the petition.
She continued: “The petition was started to send a strong message that we will not tolerate the celebration of individuals with a history of violence against women.”
Brown commented on the organization’s TikTok post. He wrote, “Can’t wait to come.”
It’s unclear if the artist was being sarcastic or genuine, but his remark quickly stirred conversation, amassing over 1,000 replies and nearly 7,000 likes. Women For Change has yet to respond to Brown’s comment.
The upcoming South Africa show supports Brown’s latest album, 11:11. In conjunction with the tour, Brown also released the deluxe edition of his 11th studio album, 11:11, adding fresh tracks like “Go Girlfriend,” “Delusional,” and “Freak.” The latter stirred further controversy when Brown took aim at fellow artist Quavo, igniting a brief exchange of diss tracks between the two.
The petition has not resulted in the cancellation of the concert.
