A Tribe Called Quest and Ye collaborator Consequence has released his star-studded new album, Nice Doing Business With You, via 192 Records/Hitmaker.
Despite his fourth album, it’s the Queens native’s first in 13 years. For the return, the 10-song project enlists guest appearances by the rap star’s inner circle, including his longtime friends Ye and Tony Williams, his friend and legendary comedian Chris Rock, infamous incarcerated Florida rap star YNW Melly, and his son Cadien The Crownholder.
The album’s biggest highlight is “Overdose,” YNW Melly’s last collaboration before he surrendered himself to Florida authorities in 2019. In October 2023, Cons recalled falling to Miami in 2019 for a studio session with Melly, Timbaland, Chief Keef, and more, and he was met with friction from a young rapper who didn’t know who he was.
Cons said YNW Melly was the only one among the youngsters to pray his respect and was eager to cut the record. “He literally was just like, ‘Yo, I got you OG yeah,’ wrote the shit,” he recalled. “He just was on some, ‘Yo, yeah I got you, Unc,’ type shit. So he ain’t do nothing but respect me…Then literally the next week I think is when that shit started cooking with the case…So I think this might be the last feature he did.”
Nice Doing Business With You features tracks such as “No Apologies” and “Love You So” where Consequence calls out industry antics and fame’s trappings, as well as some figures he may disagree with. Focused on solidifying his legacy, the album delivers clever wordplay, punchlines, and double entendres.
The rap star’s remarkable return to music follows his revelation in 2020 that he was diagnosed with lupus and diabetes. This week, he went viral after sharing he had heard a joint album between Kendrick Lamar and Ye, produced by Madlib Beats. Promoting his new album, Cons tells Bootleg Kev about what he heard.
“I just think it just needed to be structured,” he said. “But the ideas are… Yeah, I heard the whole thing. It’s there.”
