Finding dope talent that isn’t mainstream yet is a staple on Ladies First and this one-woman army right here is just that. But better believe, she will be.
I’ve been combing the internet and asking about female producers for some time, talent that is primarily hidden behind the scenes making the magic happen. Female producers don’t get much exposure as it is, and it’s my mission to bring them to the forefront.
By the time I finished my searching, a few names kept on coming up, and hers was definitely at the top of the list.
Harlem born Crystal Caines isn’t just a beast when it comes to production but she brings a unique style (spitting and fashion) to the music world. Starting off working with A$AP Ferg on some of his big records like “Work” and “Shabba” which were recorded in her home, it was Ferg who pushed her to be an artist, something she actually started out doing first before creating music with her production team The Understudy.
Out the gate, Crystal reminded me of Missy with her sound and her demeanor, so it was no surprise when she told me the icon is one of her idols.
Crystal chops it up with me about how her love for production started, why loving all types of music helps her create more, and the excitement of coming to the spotlight as an artist herself. She has an advantage over most.
When I said she’s a one woman army I mean just that – she produces her own music, writes, engineers her own tracks, and raps. She is certainly special with a message to young women out there, that you can be your true self and accepted for your gifts just as you are.
