Dame Dash has candidly discussed the sale of his Roc-A-Fella shares, suggesting that JAY-Z may not command the same reverence as other hip-hop legends. He also revealed that while Drake once expressed interest in purchasing his stake, the rapper ultimately withdrew his offer.
Last week, New York State purchased Dash’s one-third ownership of Roc-A-Fella Records—including rights to JAY-Z’s Reasonable Doubt—for $1 million in a public auction. The sale aimed to offset Dash’s $8.7 million debt, including unpaid taxes. On Monday (Nov. 18), Dash aired his grievances in a video on his America Nu Network YouTube channel, highlighting what he sees as a lack of enthusiasm for JAY-Z’s legacy. Competing bids in the auction reached only $250,000 and $223,000, both submitted anonymously.
“What this really taught me is that, in the world, [JAY-Z] isn’t as beloved as people make him out to be,” Dash remarked. “I expected more interest, especially for the cultural and artistic value of what I was selling. That’s the only thing I was offering.”
He drew a comparison to Wu-Tang Clan’s infamous Once Upon a Time in Shaolin album, which sold for millions as a collector’s item. “People truly value Wu-Tang,” Dash noted. “There’s real love for them. But here? There was no love.”
Dash went on to claim that Drake initially offered $6 million for his share but later withdrew. “I thought people would show up for this,” he admitted. “Drake put in a big offer and then disappeared. I don’t know what happened. Other than that, nobody wanted it.”
In a prior statement from September, Dash said Drake had contacted him on social media to express interest in the stake. However, Dash remains uncertain about why the deal fell through. “I thought maybe he connected with Jay or something,” he speculated. “But I really don’t know.”
Dash’s remarks paint a stark picture of perceived gaps in JAY-Z’s cultural footprint, raising questions about the industry’s valuation of legacy and artistry. Whether this sale marks the end of the saga or sparks further debate remains to be seen.
