Dame Dash shared how Aaliyah persuaded him to appear in R. Kelly and Jay-Z‘s “Fiesta (Remix)” video, despite her complicated history with Kelly. According to reports, on Monday, October 14, Dame’s American Nu Network podcast released a new episode on YouTube. During the segment, he addressed a question from Baller Alert, asking why the Roc-A-Fella cofounder appeared in the 2001 music video for Jay and Kelly’s “Fiesta (Remix).”
Dame stated, “When Jay was proceeding to still do business with R. Kelly, I went back and told Aaliyah, like, ‘Yo, they’re still doing projects. They got singles together. They are shooting videos. I don’t want to go to the videos. I don’t want to have any parts of it.”
He added, “And what she told me was that, ‘I don’t want to start any trouble that would probably trigger more attention on it. I just want to heal. I just want to leave this alone and get as far away from it as possible. I don’t want to hear about it. I’m really happy with our relationship in this moment and where it’s going. Just don’t be in any scene with him and don’t take any pictures with him.’”
As the discussion went on, Dame voiced, “I stood in the trailer. When it came time to do the shoot, I did my shots with Jay or whoever. I was not in one scene with R. Kelly. And you never seen me in a picture with R. Kelly. At least after I met Aaliyah.”
Scandal, Music, and Feuds: R. Kelly’s Controversial Ties
Aaliyah’s relationship with R. Kelly drew significant controversy during the mid-1990s, with the two becoming romantically involved when she was still a teenager. The pair entered into an illegal marriage in 1994 when Aaliyah was just 15 years old. The marriage was subsequently annulled. By 2000, Aaliyah had begun dating Dash, and the two were reportedly still together at the time of her tragic passing in August 2001.
In the early 2000s, Jay-Z and R. Kelly formed a musical partnership, collaborating on two albums, The Best of Both Worlds (2002) and Unfinished Business (2004). However, their professional relationship deteriorated by the end of 2024. The fallout reached its peak during a joint performance at Madison Square Garden, where Kelly was pepper-sprayed by a member of Jay’s entourage.
