Donald Glover bids farewell to “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” despite season two renewal.
Variety dishes that Season 1 leads Donald Glover and Maya Erskine likely won’t grace the small screen for Season 2. However, Glover, the jack-of-all-trades, is set to return as co-creator and executive producer, joining forces with Francesca Sloane, who’s back as showrunner.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith,’ is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, the outlet reports. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
Per the official series description: “In the first season of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,’ two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?”
Although Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% rating on the tomatometer, the series garnered a lukewarm reception from fans, scoring at 67%.
Glover’s exit from the show coincides with the buzz around his latest music ventures. On Monday (May 13), the artist, also known as Childish Gambino, announced on X (formerly Twitter) the release of his new album Atavista, touted as the finalized version of 3.15.20, which had previously been pulled from streaming platforms after its initial March 2020 debut.
Adding to the excitement, the 40-year-old dropped a bombshell tour announcement.
Dubbed “The New World Tour,” the 58 date trek spans North America, Europe, and Oceania from August 2024 to February 2025. Teaming up with the eclectic talents of Willow Smith and Amaarae, the party kicks off on August 11 in Oklahoma City, hitting hotspots like Toronto, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles along the way.
After wrapping up the North American leg on October 3 in Chicago, the party leaps across the pond for a European jaunt from October 31 to December 5, hitting up Milan, Berlin, and London. The tour will close out with five epic shows Down Under in New Zealand and Australia early next year.
