Drake’s love of sports has been reported on for years. So when he got the opportunity to meet up with one of the most powerful men in sports — FIFA president and CEO, Gianni Infantino — he couldn’t have been more excited. On Sunday (Sept. 29), the rapper sat with Infantino to discuss the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which the rapper’s home country, Toronto, will host. The event is also co-hosted with the United States and Mexico. The first match is scheduled to kick off on June 12. The “God’s Plan” hitmaker swelled with pride as he talked about his home country and love of soccer: “Not to make this a Canadian promo but we are the nicest people you’ll ever meet.”
He added, “Canada as a whole we have an incredible melting pot. But in Toronto, there are just so many different cultural experiences. So when the world comes it’s going to be beautiful.”The rapper noted that while he’s passionate about “many things” his passion for the World Cup is “unmatched.” Drake also happily welcomes people to visit Canada.” Of course [we] welcome with open arms and just to have all these different people who are there with passion, with competitive spirit [but] for a great game and great cause. I think it’s just gonna fill the streets with so much energy. We’ll be ready for you in Canada.”
Drake And The Impact of ‘Not Like Us’
In other news, Drake was recently embroiled in a firey beef with Kendrick Lamar. The contentious battle split the hip-hop world in two. While many sided with Drake, in the end, it seemed Lamar reigned victorious with the release of “Not Like Us.” While it probably won’t put an end to the Toronto rap star’s career, it exposed a chink in his armor. It might have also dampened further relationships. Producers like DJ Mustard —the ear behind “Not Like Us” – are now refusing to work with him.
In August, DJ Mustard revealed in an interview why he wiped his hands with the rapper. Mustard tells the LA Times he has no plans to produce a song for Drake. “I don’t think I want to make a song with that dude,” he says. The Faith Of A Mustard Seed performer says Drake is a “strange guy.” Earlier that month, Mustard referred to the rapper as the “Malcolm X of white people.”
