Eddie Murphy will play George Clinton in a forthcoming biopic, Variety reports.
Murphy is slated to give his highly anticipated portrayal of the funk legend in the untitled biopic. Bill Condon will direct the film for Amazon MGM Studios.
The project was first conceived by Catherine Davis, a diehard fan of Clinton’s and she brought the film idea to Murphy.
Murphy’s Eddie Murphy Productions will produce the film along with Davis Entertainment, Davis, and Greg Yolen. Clinton, Eddie Murphy Productions’ Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Archie Ivy, and Jeff Jampol are all signed on as executive producers.
Based on Clinton’s autobiography, “Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?,” the film is “the untold story of the influential pioneer of funk and his tumultuous journey to founding musical collective Parliament-Funkadelic.”
Regarded as one of the most innovative and outlandish acts in music history, Parliament-Funkadelic was co-founded by Clinton. They released numerous ground-breaking albums such as Maggot Brain (1971), Mothership Connection (1975), and One Nation Under a Groove (1978).
Their classic hits include “Tear the Roof Off the Sucker”, “Dr. Funkenstein “,” Flash Light”, “Bop Gun”, “Knee Dee” and many more.
Sixteen members of Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The collective was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. They remain one of the most sampled acts of all time.
Murphy previously collaborated with Amazon on Candy Cane Lane and Coming 2 America which he both produced and starred in. On Netflix, Murphy reprised his iconic role as Axel Foley in the Beverly Hills Cop sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. He also garnered critical acclaim for playing Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name in 2019.
His next film with Amazon is“The Pickup” co-starring Keke Palmer, Eva Longoria, and Pete Davidson.
