Eminem has released a new music video for his latest track, “Tobey,” in which the icon stalks and kills himself.
Directed by Cole Bennett, and featuring fellow Detriot rap stars Big Sean and BabyTron, the video captures the trio in their hometown of Detroit, with the camera highlighting multiple copies of each rapper as they perform their verses.
“Tobey” is the second single from Eminem’s forthcoming twelfth studio album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce),” set to release on July 12. The song, which dropped last Tuesday, addresses Eminem’s response to comments made by rap legend Melle Mel, who claimed that Eminem’s inclusion in a top five rappers list was due to his race.
Eminem counters in the track, “So when I get dissed though by a pioneer who is one of the reasons why I am here / They tell me that I should just let the shit go and slide / Melle Mel shouldn’t get no reply, that man is a legend / Bitch, so am I.”
At the end of the video, the icon transforms into the legendary horror villain Jason, slashes himself, and takes a chainsaw to his arm. The visual lives up to the hype of Eminem preparing to lay to rest his popular alter ego, Slim Shady.
The release of “Tobey” builds anticipation for The Death of Slim Shady, which Eminem announced in April during the NFL Draft in Detroit. To promote the album, he released a trailer inspired by “Unsolved Mysteries” and placed an obituary for his Slim Shady alter ego in the Detroit Free Press.
In late May, Eminem dropped the project’s first single, “Houdini,” which references Megan Thee Stallion, the Steve Miller Band, and his own 2002 hit, “Without Me.” While details about the album remain scarce, it has been confirmed that Dr. Dre contributed to the production.
