Ice Spice is moving forward after reaching a settlement in a copyright lawsuit over her hit song, “In Ha Mood.” The lawsuit was initiated by another rapper, D.Chamberz, who claimed that Spice’s track was “strikingly similar” to his 2021 song, “In That Mood.” During a federal court session on Friday, attorneys for both parties confirmed the decision to settle, as reported by Billboard.
Chamberz contended that his song received considerable airplay on radio stations in Spice’s native New York City, including Hot 97 and Power 105.1. In his initial filing in January, his attorneys stated, “By every method of analysis, ‘In Ha Mood’ is a forgery.” They argued that any proper comparative analysis of the beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context would show that “In Ha Mood” was copied. Chamberz maintained that the similarities between the two tracks “cannot be purely coincidental” and are central to each work.
The lawsuit also named Ice Spice’s frequent collaborator, producer RiotUSA (Ephrem Lopez, Jr.). Additionally, Universal Music Group, Capitol Records, and 10K Projects were included in the lawsuit. All parties involved denied the allegations.
Ice Spice originally released “In Ha Mood” as a single ahead of her debut EP Like..? in 2023, and it peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100. As she puts this legal matter behind her, Spice is preparing to continue her Y2K! World Tour overseas next month, with performances scheduled in cities like Dublin, London, Paris, and Berlin through January. Recently, she made headlines for appearing at Sexyy Red’s show in New York City, where she performed her hit “Deli.”
