Jermaine Dupri recently shared his thoughts on the state of modern R&B, expressing concern that the younger generation is missing out on crucial lessons due to a lack of churchgoing. During a livestream on Instagram, Dupri argued that this absence of church influence is why today’s R&B singers don’t measure up to those of the 1990s. He used iconic artists like Bryan-Michael Cox and Jodeci to illustrate his point.

“Young Black youth of today do not go to church, and they don’t have that church band grooming,” Dupri explained. He emphasized that the soulfulness found in classic R&B, which many listeners associate with the genre, stems from a church background. “If you gone’ make these records, it’s hard to beat Jodeci when you don’t have that element. Anthony Hamilton comes from the church. You not gone’ get that sh*t that’s in his voice, you ain’t just getting that from being on the internet,” Dupri said.

Fans quickly reacted to Dupri’s comments after Live Bitez shared them, with many agreeing with his views. One user wrote, “Happy we got our kids in church and they are getting better with singing and their instruments,” while another added, “Agree! I was just jammin’ to Anthony Hamilton earlier, and that man sangs!”

During the same livestream, Dupri also shared his opinion on R. Kelly’s influence in R&B, stating, “I’m not here to talk about none of that bullsh*t that he’s involved with, but he is the R in R&B. Hands down.”

The debate over the current state of R&B has been a hot topic in recent years, with notable figures like Diddy, Tank, Aries Spears, and Joe Budden weighing in on the conversation.
