John Legend’s recent performance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago has sparked mixed reactions online. Legend took the stage at the United Center, performing a spirited cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” alongside Sheila E., who was a close collaborator of the late musician. The performance came just before Tim Walz accepted the Vice Presidential nomination.

While Legend is known for his vocal talent, some viewers felt his style didn’t suit the iconic Prince track. Many on social media argued that Sheila E. would have been better off performing solo or with a different artist. One user on X expressed their frustration, saying, “Who the hell decided that John Legend was the perfect pick to perform Let’s Go Crazy? Don’t do that sh*t again. Sheila E. and that guitarist alone was fire! #DNC.” Another user added, “I’m sorry but John Legend doesn’t have the singing style or voice of Prince. They should’ve got someone else to cover his song.”

Despite the criticism, some defended Legend’s performance, calling it a fitting tribute to Prince. One element of the show that garnered widespread praise was the guitar work by Ari O’Neal. Fans were especially impressed by her skills, with one saying, “I don’t know who the guitarist was who was absolutely shredding with John Legend and Sheila E on ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ but I think I’m in love.”

In addition to Legend and Sheila E., other artists such as Lil Jon, Patti LaBelle, and Mickey Guyton also performed at the event. “Let’s Go Crazy” is a standout track from Prince’s 1984 album “Purple Rain.” It remains one of his most successful songs. The track spent two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Sheila E., who has a deep connection to Prince, brought authenticity to the performance. Meanwhile, Legend, a strong supporter of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, praised Harris as a “smart, charismatic and empathetic” leader.
