Kanye West is starting a new chapter in Tokyo, though he’s not putting down permanent roots in the city, according to music journalist Touré. Instead of buying property, Kanye is living in a hotel while he works on his new album, Bully, which he’s self-producing.

Touré described Kanye’s current situation as “upper-class homeless,” with the rapper enjoying the freedom of hotel living without the responsibility of maintaining a home. Kanye has been spending a lot of time in Tokyo, preferring the quieter atmosphere, where he’s left mostly alone, even with his A-list status. This is a stark contrast to his life in Los Angeles, where he frequently clashes with paparazzi.

According to Touré, Kanye enjoys Tokyo because fans are “very quiet” and “very respectful,” allowing him to move around the city freely without the need for a large entourage. This low-key lifestyle fits his tendency to relocate often, as he’s lived in various places like Wyoming, Malibu, and Chicago throughout his career.

Kanye’s constant moving also impacted his personal life, particularly his marriage to Kim Kardashian. On Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim expressed frustration over Kanye’s desire to live in different states, away from her and their children, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.

In 2021, Kanye made headlines when he purchased a Malibu mansion for $57 million, only to gut it in an effort to turn it into a bomb shelter. He later sold the unfinished property for $21 million.

Despite his history of changing homes, it seems Kanye is content with his nomadic lifestyle in Tokyo, possibly making him one of the wealthiest “homeless” individuals in the world.
