In an unexpected move, Ye (formerly Kanye West) has publicly criticized My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, an album widely regarded as his magnum opus. Although the 2010 release is frequently recognized as one of the greatest albums in music history, Ye holds a much more critical view.

Over the weekend, Yeezy took to social media platform X to voice his dissatisfaction, declaring, “I hate My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Like haaaaaaate that album.” This candid remark left many fans shocked, especially considering the album’s widespread accolades.

Elaborating on his feelings, Ye articulated that the album was fueled by fear and a need to validate himself. He described it as a reaction to the notorious 2009 MTV Video Music Awards incident involving Taylor Swift, stating, “It was like ‘coming back from the Taylor Swift moment.’ I should have leaned in more.” This frank acknowledgment offers a more profound insight into the emotional landscape that influenced the album’s creation. Furthermore, West unfavorably contrasted MBDTF with his 2016 project The Life of Pablo, asserting, “The Life of Pablo is waaaay better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Go song for song.” This assertion reignited discussions regarding the merits of his body of work.

Despite Kanye’s Criticism, Fans Still Crown Dark Fantasy as His Magnum Opus

Despite his critical viewpoint, Ye did mention a few tracks from MBDTF that he still values, such as “Devil in a New Dress” and “Blame Game.” He also reminisced about his 2013 album Yeezus, highlighting songs like “On Site,” “Hold My Liquor,” and “Blood on the Leaves” as favorites. Additionally, he recounted a story about the album’s title change, revealing, “N****r Cock, now known as Yeezus, because Don C influenced me to change the title.”

This is not the first occasion on which the rapper has downplayed the importance of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which was ranked 17th on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest albums of all time. Just last month, he stirred conversation by stating that his album Ye was “waaay better than Dark Fantasy,” a comment that left many fans perplexed.

Released in 2018, Ye received a mixed reception and is often viewed as one of the mogul’s less significant works. Reactions on social media were immediate and critical, with some labeling the album as “trash” and questioning Ye’s honesty. Nevertheless, a fan poll indicated that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy remained the overwhelming favorite, garnering over 78 percent of the votes.
