In a recent interview, KAYTRANADA shed light on a missed chance to collaborate with Drake, adding another chapter to the ongoing saga of 2024, which some have dubbed the “Year of Drake Hate.” However, this isn’t a story of animosity or even fresh news. Rather, it’s an intriguing look at a near-collaboration that never came to be.

During an interview with Vulture, KAYTRANADA revealed that Drake’s team approached him at a Coachella after-party in Los Angeles in 2022, asking if he would be interested in creating beats for Drake’s house album, Honestly, Nevermind. While he was interested, the project never materialized, and KAYTRANADA thinks his laid-back response might have been the reason. He explained, “Was I supposed to be like, ‘Oh my God, for real? Drake?’ I’m not like that,” indicating that his lack of overt excitement might have led Drake’s camp to reconsider.

KAYTRANADA had previously mentioned this interaction in a December interview with MONTREALITY. He recalled, “I met Drake in L.A. one time, and that was it, really. At one point, one of his boys was like, ‘Your boy wants some beats. He’s gonna do a house album.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, hit me up.’ That’s my thing: anybody that wanna work with me, just hit me up. Maybe my reaction rubbed them the wrong way, but I was just saying, ‘Hey, if you’re serious, hit me up, let’s work, for real.’”

Although this potential collaboration never came to fruition, there’s no animosity between the two Canadian artists. Instead, fans are eager to see what could happen if they do team up in the future. KAYTRANADA’s recent work with artists like Mach-Hommy and 03 Greedo showcases his ability to enhance a rapper’s sound, making many hopeful that Drake might someday work with him. If tracks like “#RICHAXXHAITIAN” are any indication, a future collaboration could be a perfect match for both artists.
