Kiyan Anthony, son of Carmelo Anthony and La La Anthony, announced that he’s taking his talents to Syracuse University.
During an appearance on the season 2 premiere of “7 PM in Brooklyn,” Kiyan made the announcement accompanied by his parents. The University of Southern California (USC) and Auburn University were also in pursuit of Kiyan.
“They already have top people coming in who I’m close with, a young coaching staff that I could connect to and I’m close to home,” Kiyan said. “Just all of that and then [to play] in the ACC, they play Duke, Carolina – they play all the good schools so I feel like all of that plays a part into why I chose Syracuse.”
Carmelo expressed his excitement that Kiyan will be attending his alma mater.
“I was just waiting for you to say this sh*t. It was just time for him. No more flip-flopping,” Carmelo explained. “You go on these visits and they got to pull out all the stops. So everything looks good, everything sounds good. You can’t go off of what’s offered and you know what I mean? You got to really go off of people. So I’m glad that he decided to make this decision.”
“I’m overwhelmed and I’m happy because I think it’s an incredible decision. They’re an incredible school and they really worked hard in recruiting and just making him feel like a priority,” La La added. “They were great and I mean it’s big shoes to fill, but at the same time, this is his moment and his lane and it’s time for him to create his own reality. So I’m excited. Plus it’s like a five-hour drive I think, but like a 45-minute flight. I could get there really fast. I’m going to be there.”
A 6-5 shooting guard, Kiyan is currently the 32nd-ranked high school player in the country and the top player in New York. Last year at Long Island Lutheran, he averaged 8.1 points and 2.3 steals last season with a loaded squad that finished No. 2 in the MaxPreps National Top 10 with a 21-5 record.
While playing on the Nike EYBL 17U circuit, he put up 19.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists a game.
Long Island Lutheran is the No. 5 ranked team in the Preseason National Top 10.
