Latto recreates an early 2000s classic with some star-studded guests to promote her upcoming album, Sugar Honey Ice Tea.
Big Mama teased the third album at her Big Birthday Bash in Atlanta last month and has now unveiled a cinematic trailer, rich with Atlanta landmarks like Cascade roller rink, features cameos from Georgia music legends T.I. and 2 Chainz, and narration by Big Rube. Many are familiar with T.I. and Big Rube starring in the 2006 film. This makes Sugar Honey Iced Tea a true homage to her hometown.
Among the stars, the trailer features the previously released track “Big Mama.” Latto released the song and music video last month featuring her sister Brooklyn.
Interestingly, the album’s title, “Sugar Honey Iced Tea,” might be more than just a nod to a Southern favorite drink. However, it could also be a clever response to Latto’s recent brief feud with Ice Spice. The title acronym, SH*T, seems to be Latto’s unrepentant reply to Ice Spice’s diss track, asserting her confidence and making a bold statement.
The performance of Latto at the inaugural TwoGetherland Festival in Dallas, Texas gave her a lot of attention because she made an allusion to dissing Ice Spice during the performance. She opened the performance with “Sunday Service,” a diss track towards Ice Spice. Sugar Honey Ice Tea drops on August 9, a week after Ice Spice makes her debut with Y2K, releasing this Friday (July 26).
Latto spoke on Ice Spice beef during her cover story with this month’s Billboard magazine. When asked about a rap battle against Ice Spice, Latto replied, “I mean this in the most understanding [way]: I’m a fan of music. I’m not one of them “lyrical only, anything else is bullsh-t” people. There’s so many subgenres that I’m a fan of — like mosh pit-type music; when Drake is in his melodic bag, I like that type sh-t — and all of it is still hip-hop.”
She continued: “If I was to do [a battle], it would have to be with somebody I feel like Imma go tit for tat with. I really don’t mean it as shade. Would she even want to do that? I feel like she’s doing her in her lane. It’s two different types of vibes. I don’t even think she gives me like, “Oh, she wants to engage in an actual rap beef.”
Ice Spice and Latto performed at this year’s BET Awards in Los Angeles. A clip of Latto talking about Ice Spice backstage surfaced on social media. “I’m the mutherf*ckin’ stankest fart you ever smell, b*tch,” said Latto.
