Lil Durk‘s legal drama piles up with news of an additional federal case. The rap star is named in new allegations linking him to the 2022 murder of Stephon Mack. Mack, 24, was fatally shot outside Chicago’s Youth Peace Center of Roseland.
According to court documents obtained by The Chicago Tribune on December 12, Mack was allegedly the leader of Smashville, a faction of the Gangster Disciples. The FBI also suspects Mack may have been connected to the 2021 murder of Durk’s brother, Dontay “DThang” Banks.
A federal agent alleged in 2023 that Durk offered bounties on those responsible for his brother’s killing, specifically targeting Gangster Disciples. The report claims the rapper has been “offering money for people to kill those responsible for his brother’s murder” and incentivizing hits on members of the gang.
Although two suspects have been charged in Mack’s murder, Lil Durk has not been formally implicated. However, federal prosecutors may cite the incident in his upcoming court hearing to argue for his continued custody. The investigation remains active.
The rapper, born Durk Banks, is already facing charges related to the shooting death of Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, the cousin of Quando Rondo, in what authorities allege was a retaliatory attack. Durk was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Miami after reportedly attempting to flee the country via private jet.
Durk’s legal team has dismissed the charges as baseless, accusing authorities of relying on his rap lyrics rather than substantive evidence.
“The reliance on artistic expression is a glaring indication that there is no real evidence against Mr. Banks,” his attorneys told The Tribune.
They emphasized Durk’s ongoing commitment to his community, citing his Neighborhood Heroes Foundation and numerous charitable events in Chicago.
The rapper’s mounting legal issues have also delayed the release of his anticipated album Deep Thoughts, now slated for January 31, 2025. The project has already faced multiple postponements due to his ongoing court battles. Whether these legal challenges will derail his career or fuel his art remains a question for fans and critics alike.
