According to the mayor’s office, Lil Durk’s arrest on Thursday resulted in the withdrawal of his recently received key to the Illinois city of Village of Broadview and the termination of his organization’s partnership. Mayor Katrina Thompson issued an official statement on the withdrawal on Friday morning (Oct. 25).
From Village of Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson:
“While the American system of justice grants everyone the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law, in the Village of Broadview, the court of public opinion of residents has even higher moral and ethical standards of behavior. And our public partners must also reflect the same uncompromising standards demanded by our residents. Given the news that Durk “Lil Durk” Banks has been arrested in Florida and charged with murder for hire, the Village of Broadview is withdrawing our honorary ‘key to the village’ granted to Durk and is terminating our partnership agreement with his youth organization, Neighborhood Heroes Foundation. As mayor, protecting Broadview’s interests and upholding the values of residents is job number one.”
A celebration of Durk’s Neighborhood Heroes Foundation’s new partnership with Broadview was held last week. Excited for the future, Mayor Thompson shared the following post on her Instagram account, captioned:
“Thank you, @lildurk, and the @neighborhoodheroesfoundation, for your incredible support of the Broadview and Bellwood Young Scholars. Your commitment to empowering our youth and helping them create a path toward a brighter future is truly inspiring. The opportunities you’ve provided through education and sustainability initiatives will leave a lasting impact on our communities. We are beyond grateful for your partnership and the difference you’re making in the lives of our young leaders.”
Lil Durk, 32, real name Devontay Durk Banks, was arrested in Florida on a federal charge of murder-for-hire. He is currently held in the Broward County Correctional Facility, awaiting transfer to California. After having a peace concert and partnering with the city to fight gun violence, the Grammy-nominated rap star’s arrest shocked hip-hop.
Indictments filed in a US District Court in Los Angeles obtained by USA TODAY Friday allege five people, allegedly associated with the 32-year-old rap star’s OTF crew, were charged with federal murder-for-hire for allegedly targeting Georgia rapper Quando Rondo in retaliation for the murder of Chicago rapper King Von.
