Lil Mama has criticized Nicki Minaj for influencing a generation of “musical prostitutes.” On July 1, Lil Mama shared her views on Instagram, responding to a post by Dee-1. Dee-1 had shared a montage of Sexyy Red, GloRilla, Latto, Ice Spice, and Megan Thee Stallion performing at the BET Awards, set against his own song “Purify My Eyes.” In his track, Dee-1 criticizes the oversexualization of female rappers, stating: “I turned on the awards show and the things I’ve seen on the screen/ Will make me cause a scene ’cause it’s so obscene/ We call women queens but we celebrate the prostitution of their bodies.” He captioned the post, urging BET to do better as a culture.
Lil Mama echoed Dee-1’s sentiments, targeting Nicki Minaj specifically. She commented: “Then gave Nicki an award for leading this pack. Corporate ‘BARS’ be going over our head. They laughing at us for sure!” Responding to another user, she added: “Key word… THIS Pack. These young women are not influenced by Kim. Nicki is influenced by Kim. These women are 23. What major musical prostitutes do you remember from the last 15 years?”
Lil Mama continued, saying, “Who do you think they watched corporate give a platform and flowers for slitting out. Be forreal. Like I said they are laughing at us and the award was a ‘thanks to you, now we have 7,8, 9 of em.’” She expressed hope that these women would eventually realize their true worth, beyond any price tag.
The “Kim” in question is Lil Kim, whom Nicki Minaj has cited as a major influence. The two began feuding in 2010 over accusations that Nicki stole Kim’s style. Recently, Nicki criticized her former manager, Debra Antney, for trying to mediate between her and Lil Kim without her consent. Nicki expressed her frustration on social media, emphasizing that she did not authorize any attempts to reconcile the feud.
