Lizzo is baring her sole about dealing with public perception.

During an interview with Jay Shetty’s On Purpose, the Grammy Award winner spoke about taking time off from the industry to reconnect with herself.

“And like when I said I was on a gap year. I was in the middle of it, and I think people were like, oh, she’s about to take a whole year off. I’m like, ‘No. I was just in the middle of it. I just hadn’t like expressed myself really,’ Lizzo explained.

“And to be honest with you, I don’t feel like I’ve expressed myself fully in the last two years, like how I want to. I feel like I’ve been kind of holding my tongue and like staying to myself, but I think that it’s for the best because you know, running your mouth these days,” she continued. “Sometimes it’s just unnecessary and sometimes it can get you into some stuff you wasn’t even trying to get into because people will misinterpret it and run with it. I found when I was like, I’m taking a gap year, I’m protecting my peace. But like, people were like, wait, so what’s that supposed to mean?”

Elsewhere in the interview, Lizzo shared how blessed she is although she has to manuver through challenges.

“I don’t need to share my pain. I need to share my joy. I need to share my love. I’m a very blessed person. I get to make music for a living. I have people who love me. I have people who’ve never met me who love me because of the music that I make,” she said. “And I get to travel all over the world and connect with those people and touch those people.

I can support my family financially. As a fat black woman who was born in Detroit and raised in Houston, Texas, the odds were stacked against me, and I beat the odds. And I’m here and I’m surviving and thriving in this world,” she continued. “I am grateful and I think that my position is to always show that gratitude. I wanna live in a constant state of gratitude and I wanna, and I want to emit that, you know, and I wanna just really show the world love at all times.

She also shared how she took back her power.

I’m never gonna stop… If anything, I’m more careful now,” Lizzo said. “ I can’t just let any author into my life who can make me a villain. I can’t do that anymore. ’cause I’m the author and I. Taking back my narrative by continuing to tell my story from me, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to do that.”
