Brooklyn honored Maino with his own day on Friday (Feb. 23). August 16 is officially recognized as Jermaine “Maino” Coleman Day in the rap star’s borough. Supported by family and friends, the “Hi Hater” hitmaker received a proclamation from 20th Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in a special ceremony at Brooklyn Borough Hall Rotunda.
In an Instagram post on Friday, Maino shared the achievement with fans, including a photo op with officials, family, and friends. The caption read, “MAINO DAY AUG 16th. Thank you to the Brooklyn Borough President @bkbpreynoso @iamvianca_bentley @hustlehardherbie #BrooklynWeDit.”
The proclamation and creation of the day honor Maino’s Hip Hop career and local community impact. It is one of the highest honors in a city.
“Hip-hop is more than a genre – it’s a way of healing, growing, and giving back to the neighborhoods that made us,” said President Reynoso. “All over Brooklyn and beyond, Maino is recognized as an inspiration because he proves the power of hip-hop to bring us together through good times and bad. Maino Day will serve as a celebration of his legacy and a reminder to Brooklynites to never give up and never forget to spread love.”
Maino made his musical debut in 2008 after serving 10 years in prison. His success in music would transcend to actor, podcaster, motivational speaker, and entrepreneur. His community activism champions youth empowerment and shows his Brooklyn pride.
Fellow Brooklyn rap stars Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, and Papoose were among those who congratulated Maino on his designation in the comments section.
Maino celebrated the honor with new music as he released his new single “Poetry” featuring Young Thug.
Maino and Jim Jones spoke about their growth as artists in an interview with Ebro in the Morning in 2022. Check out the full interview below.
