Rap legend Master P gave the keynote address to 365 graduates at Grambling State University’s 2024 commencement ceremony.
Held on Saturday (Dec. 14) at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center, Master P inspired those in attendance.
“Education is so important, and I love that we can change, we can grow,” Master P shared. “Today is about change. It’s about being all you can be. I’ve been through everything you could think of. I’ve seen it. I’ve been there. And when I look into your eyes, I realize why we’re about to be on time.”
The “Make ’em Say Ugh” rapper spoke to the crowd about the importance of higher education.
“A lot of people have given four or five years to incarceration; y’all gave it to education,” Master P said.
He went on to implore the graduating class to preserve despite the challenges they’ll encounter.
“Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you,” Master P said.
“Wisdom is supreme. When you look into the mirror, just know you are your only competition,” he continued. “Whatever you can dream of, you can make it come true—just have a plan and a purpose. Do what you love, operate with integrity, and hold yourself accountable. Never abandon your dream, and always be brave.”
For his final message, Master P exhorted the graduates to go and change the world.
“The future is yours. It’s in your hands,” he said. “Now go show the world what Grambling State greatness looks like.”
During his speech, the crowd could not contain their excitement. When he was announced as the keynote speaker, the school expressed its admiration for the No Limit Records founder.
“As the founder of No Limit Records, he revolutionized the music industry by creating a blueprint for independent success. “The label sold over 100 million records globally,” the university said. “He helped launch and sustain the careers of music legends like Snoop Dogg, Mia X, and Silkk the Shocker.”
