According to reports, Meek Mill weighed in on the unsettling body camera footage showing corrections officers brutally assaulting a man, leading to his death while in custody.
On Monday, Meek took to his X account to address the disturbing footage showing corrections officers brutalizing Robert Brooks, an incarcerated man at a prison in upstate New York. The video depicts officers pinning Brooks, who is restrained in handcuffs, while others repeatedly strike him with punches and kicks as he lies unconscious. Meek posted, “I never fully watched this til today … this what it is for Black men in America if you get caught without them cameras around.” “If you been to jail b4 you seen this with your own eyes!”
Bodycam Footage Released as Officials Demand Investigation
Legal records reveal that the incident took place on December 10 at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County, New York. On Friday, New York State Attorney General Letitia James made the bodycam footage public, while Governor Kathy Hochul called for a comprehensive probe into Brooks’ death the following day. She also urged authorities to dismiss 14 officers implicated in the assault.
Meek Mill has long been an advocate for prison reform and social justice. In 2019, the Philadelphia-born rapper joined forces with JAY-Z, Michael Rubin, Robert Kraft, and others to establish the REFORM Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing changes in probation, parole, and sentencing laws through lobbying and legislative efforts. The organization has been a driving force in social justice activism, securing significant legislative victories across several states. During the COVID-19 crisis, the organization played a vital role in prison welfare, distributing 12.5 million masks and PPE to both inmates and correctional staff.
In October, REFORM achieved a landmark agreement with the United Nations, ensuring the protection of rights for those reentering society from prison and navigating probation or parole.
