Megan Thee Stallion’s vulnerable journey to fame is the focus of In Her Words, a new documentary from Amazon MGM Studios. On Wednesday, fans were treated to a preview of the film with a two-minute trailer, co-produced by TIME Studios and Roc Nation. Directed by Nneka Onuorah, the documentary is set for release on Halloween. In the trailer, Megan reflects on a challenging time in her life, raising a key question that drives the film: “I feel like, how can I be Megan Thee Stallion when I’m not having fun?”
The trailer highlights Megan’s vulnerable connection to music and her late mother, Holly Thomas. “Music has always been in my life,” Megan says. “I wouldn’t be here without my mom. My momma was like a gangster rapper. I was like, when I get older I really wanna be like her. That’s when I really started creating Megan Thee Stallion. That was when I was my happiest.”
In 2019, Megan lost her mother, leaving her heartbroken. “I was in shambles,” she recalls, describing how her mother’s absence led to a personal and professional crisis. “When life started getting crazy, I didn’t have her,” she adds, explaining how she struggled with backlash and a breakdown. Ultimately, it was her alter ego, Megan Thee Stallion, that helped her cope. “I think Megan Thee Stallion is trying to protect Megan Pete,” she explains.
Director Nneka Onuorah expressed her pride in telling Megan’s story: “I feel so honored to work with Amazon MGM Studios, Roc Nation, and TIME Studios to share Megan’s story. Her raw and beautiful spirit really shines through in the film. She is a champion for all women who deserve their truth to be heard.”
