Ne-Yo has opened up about a transformative shift in his approach to relationships, revealing a newfound freedom after embracing his authentic self. Speaking candidly on The Lemon Drop Show, the Grammy-winning R&B artist admitted that monogamy is not a lifestyle that aligns with his values or desires.
“I realized I hadn’t been living my truth for a very long time,” Ne-Yo shared. “Now I am, and you can see it—my skin is glowing. I’m in a great place mentally, emotionally, and in every other way.”
For the singer, rejecting traditional relationship norms has brought clarity and peace.
Society’s expectation of lifelong monogamy, he explained, doesn’t suit everyone. “I’m not discrediting marriage or those who make it work,” he said. “But it’s not for me. Finally accepting that feels like a weight has been lifted.” Ne-Yo expressed regret over the years he spent pretending to be someone he wasn’t, calling it “time wasted.” Instead, he now prioritizes honesty and authenticity. “I don’t have to lie anymore, and I’ll never go back to being someone who has to hide for the sake of someone else’s comfort.”
This revelation follows a turbulent chapter in Ne-Yo’s personal life. In February 2023, he finalized his divorce from Crystal Renay, with whom he shares three children. The split was marred by allegations of infidelity, with Renay accusing Ne-Yo of fathering a child outside their marriage. She publicly criticized his behavior, writing on social media about the heartbreak of “eight years of unknowingly sharing my life and husband with numerous women.”
Renay’s accusations painted a picture of betrayal, with claims of unprotected encounters and deceptive behavior. “To say I’m heartbroken and disgusted is an understatement,” she wrote. “To ask me to stay and accept it is absolutely insane. The mentality of a narcissist.”
Since the divorce, Ne-Yo has fully embraced his bachelor lifestyle. He has been spotted with multiple women on dates and vacations and has openly advocated for alternative relationship models. In an interview with TMZ over the summer, the 45-year-old even suggested that polygamy should be legalized. “I don’t put a limit on my number of girlfriends,” he said with confidence.
For Ne-Yo, the journey toward self-acceptance has redefined his life and relationships. By shedding societal expectations, he’s found a personal truth that, he says, has brought him unmatched freedom.
