On Saturday (June 8), boxing superstar Ryan Garcia (25-1-20KOs) was reportedly detained in Beverly Hills, California.
A video online shows a man, alleged to be Garcia, being escorted out of a hotel in handcuffs. TMZ Sports reports that Garcia was arrested for felony vandalism at the Waldorf Astoria for causing extensive damage to his hotel room and the hallway, leading to over $15,000 in damage.
In California, damages exceeding $400 can be classified as a felony. Garcia’s attorney, Darin Chavez, stated to ESPN, suggesting that Garcia might also face charges of public intoxication. Chavez revealed that Garcia had recently received devastating news about his mother’s health, which has significantly affected his mental state.
“Ryan has been open about his struggles with mental health over the years, and at this time he is dealing with an immense emotional burden,” Chavez said. “The support and understanding from fans and the public are crucial as he navigates these personal challenges. We are working diligently to provide Ryan with the resources he needs. Our team is committed to ensuring that he receives the appropriate help and care to address both his immediate and long-term well-being. We ask for continued support and compassion as Ryan focuses on his family and his health at this time.”
TMZ Sports previously reported that a family member of Garcia’s called for a wellness check at the same hotel on Wednesday. Previously, the New York State Athletic Commission had required Garcia to undergo a mental health evaluation before his April fight with Devin Haney.
Garcia recently secured a non-title majority decision victory against WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney. However, the result of that fight is now in question following Garcia’s positive test for a banned substance.
