Saweetie has a notable list of famous family members, but she insists her success is all due to her own hard work and talent. On Wednesday (July 10th), the “Tap In” rapper appeared on Lil Yachty’s “A Safe Place” podcast, where she discussed her nepo baby claims and “interesting family tree.”
She mentioned some of her well-known relatives, such as actress Gabrielle Union, her father’s cousin, and her grandfather, former San Francisco 49ers player Willie Harper. Saweetie also revealed some lesser-known family connections.
“My uncles, we grew up in the same church as [Zaytoven] and his family, so we became family by [the Lord]. My dad was one of the bodyguards for MC Hammer, and MC Hammer — well, Uncle Stan — his family joined my grandmother’s church,” Saweetie explained. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see my grandfather play football because, by the time I was older, he had transitioned into being a pastor.”
She emphasized the role of the church in bringing their families together. Saweetie also noted that many of her relatives didn’t know about her music career until her songs “ICY GRL” and “My Type” started gaining attention.
“They had [come] up to me like, ‘Why didn’t you tell me you was doing music? If you need me, I’m here.’ So, no, [they didn’t help me]. I’ve always been really self-sufficient, but I know the help is there if I need it,” she said.
These remarks come after a viral incident where someone on Twitter labeled her a “nepo baby.” Saweetie quickly shut down the claim, saying, “It spits in the face of the child who grew up barely spending time with her parents because they [were] too busy hustlin’ trying to make ends meet.”
On the music front, Saweetie released her single “NANi” in May, following other 2024 singles like “Richtivities” and “Khutti.”
