Saweetie performed at Vegandale during Chicago’s Pride In the Park on Sunday, June 23. Unfortunately, her set was abruptly cut short due to an alleged fight in the audience.
Videos circulating online show Saweetie, known for her hit “ICY GRL,” asking her DJ to stop the music. She then questioned the crowd, “I know y’all ain’t doing what I think y’all doing. Is everybody safe?” Soon after, the footage shows attendees fleeing the area. Concerned for the safety of her fans, Saweetie tweeted that evening, “[I] hope everyone got home safe tonight. That crowd looked crazy.”
The next day, a Twitter user accused Saweetie of being insincere. They wrote, “It was a festival! Straight [clown]. Don’t bring your a** back to Chicago; you’ve done enough… It was babies out there getting trampled on for nothing,” and criticized her for continuing her performance. Saweetie quickly responded, defending her actions. She said, “The crowd did look crazy, which is why I hope everyone got home safe. Also, I could’ve [gone] home after the fight broke out, but I stayed [and] waited after 2 [Chainz] performed. I went back on stage to finish my set [because] I care… [You] clearly don’t like me, so why [did] you stay for the rest of my set when the festival was clearly over?”
Saweetie is set to perform next at Angie’s Summer BBQ on July 13, alongside artists like Normani, Maiya The Don, 41, Connie Diiamond, and Honey Bxby. In May, she released the summer anthem “NANi,” and earlier this year, she dropped tracks like “Richtivities,” “IMMORTAL FREESTYLE,” and “Do It For The Bay,” a collaboration with P-LO for Super Bowl LVIII.
Not all of Saweetie’s headlines have been positive. She was entangled in a rap feud involving Quavo and Chris Brown, with allegations that she cheated on Quavo with Brown. Despite the drama, Saweetie has largely shrugged off the rumors, although she did throw some shade at Quavo when he tried to reconnect.
