Snoop Dogg is facing major backlash after performing at a Donald Trump inauguration celebration event, leading to a significant loss of social media followers. According to the New York Post, the rap legend has lost 571,800 Instagram followers since his appearance at the Crypto Ball on January 17th, where Rick Ross and Soulja Boy also performed. On X (formerly Twitter), his follower count dropped by nearly 20,000.
Despite the exodus, Snoop still commands a massive following, with over 88 million on Instagram and more than 20 million on X. However, his performance at the pro-Trump event and photos with MAGA supporters and far-right figures have sparked outrage. Critics include a former Barack Obama staffer, who called him out for hypocrisy after Snoop previously criticized Black artists for performing at Trump’s 2017 inauguration. The ex-Obama staffer wrote on X: “Who would have guessed that Snoop Dogg would end up being one of the ‘Uncle Tom ass n-ggers’ he himself railed against not long ago? What a fucking sellout.”
Snoop, 53, has addressed the controversy head-on. In an Instagram video, he pushed back against the criticism, saying, “Y’all can’t hate enough me for me, I love too much. Get your life right, stop worrying about mine. I’m cool, I’m together. Still a Black man. Still a hundred percent Black. I ain’t going nowhere, cuh!”
He also called for unity among Black people, urging them to uplift each other instead of tearing each other down. “I’m a strong Black man, I’m cut from a different cloth. You can’t tear me down. I’m one of God’s children, and I’m taking the load,” he said.
Though Snoop was a vocal Trump critic early on, his stance shifted after Trump pardoned Death Row co-founder Michael “Harry O” Harris in 2021. Reflecting on this, Snoop told The Sunday Times: “Donald Trump? He ain’t done nothing wrong to me… He pardoned Michael Harris. So I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.”
